- Research Team Led by Joonhong Park Finds Microplastic Levels in Seoul Subways Up to 3.7 Times Higher Than Outdoors
- A research team led by Joonhong Park, Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Yonsei University, has reported that significantly higher levels of particulate matter and microplastics were detected in the air inside Seoul subway stations and trains compared to outdoor environments. In particular, the concentration of microplastics was found to be up to 3.7 times higher than outdoor levels. The study was published in the international journal Journal of Hazardous Materials, and the findings were also reported by The Chosun Ilbo. The research team conducted a year-long comparative analysis of air samples collected from subway stations, nearby outdoor locations, and residential indoor spaces. The elevated concentrations of particulate matter and microplastics were attributed to the subway’s limited natural ventilation, which prevents pollutants generated in enclosed underground spaces from being adequately dispersed. Professor Park, the principal investigator, emphasized that wearing a mask capable of blocking both particulate matter and microplastics while using the subway is currently the most practical measure to reduce long-term health risks. https://www.chosun.com/english/travel-food-en/2026/01/22/NC3ZNRXCV5COLPHQKVHZSQRUXI/
